5. Earthworm Jim’s Suit:
Fell from the heavens and landed on the poor guy, if I remember correctly. I say ‘poor guy’, he was clearly enhanced quite a bit by the experience. Even so, i’m sure he’d have preferred some say in the matter. My point is, the game features an attack in which the suit whips Jim out, and uses his body as a… whip. So what’s Jim even there for? It’s really the suit that’s a hero, and the worm is completely unnecessary.
4. Donkey Kong:
Nintendo’s famous ape sports the simplest of costumes. It consists of a tie. Many humans lack the sophistication to pull off a tie, so you’ve got to admire DK’s sense of style. It raises a strange question though: why stop there? If you recognise the importance of clothing, but are somehow limited to only one garment, at least make it a pair of trousers or something. Must just be a Kong thing. See also: Diddy and his baseball cap.
3. Rose’s ‘Bride of Frankenstein’ costume (Super Street Fighter IV):
My favourite of the dlc outfits, available in the Ultra Femme Fatales Pack. DLC of this kind is always a touchy issue for gamers, demanding a small charge for content already on the disk. From my comfortable position on the fence, though, I’d simply say: if you want it, buy it. As I did here. It’s a much better look for the character than her default, and I was more than happy with the purchase.
2. Link’s Tunic (The Legend of Zelda):
Probably second in the iconic stakes only to Mario and his dungarees. The legendary green garment and matching hat must sometimes be earned before it can be worn. Acquiring it has become the point for me where Link’s adventure truly begins. It was a defining moment in The Wind Waker, taking the Hylian from young boy in his pyjamas to fledgling hero in a puff of pure potential.
1. Gangster Leon (Resident Evil 4):
Mainly for entertainment value, Gangster Leon takes the top spot. There was one main reason I liked this: it was seemingly the only way to make our hero seem any more out of place. Coupled with the Chicago Typewriter machine gun, hilarity comes perilously close to prevailing. It had a genuine function too: wearing this also gave you Ashley in her suit of armour. That saved me several times during playthroughs on pro, as you could take advantage of her invincibility. He looked quite cool too.
