Can This Neo Geo Handheld Be Real?

It appears that the Neo Geo Pocket Color won’t be SNK’s last handheld ever, if this news is to be believed. The folks at Famicom Plaza have gotten a first look at a new Neo Geo handheld, which SNK Playmore has officially licensed their name to.

Currently referred to as the “Neo Geo Portable Device,” the handheld has a 4.3″ screen, 2GB of internal storage, SD Card slot, 3.5mm audio jack, A/V out. The device is powered by a 2200mAh battery. It also features an analog stick, 4 face buttons, 2 shoulder buttons, menu and start buttons, and volume buttons.

Aesthetically, it cribs much from the current iPhone, with a silvery, metallic band wrapping the edge of the shiny, black body. The dimensions clock in at 170 x 72 x 15mm; compare it to the iPhone’s 115.2 x 58.6 x 9.3mm.

The included games span much of SNK’s library (including stinkers like Cyber Lip), and you aren’t going to get any current releases. The SD card holds promise in closing that gap however:

  • 1.WORLD HEROES
  • 2.ULTIMATE 11
  • 3.TOP PLAYER’S GOLF
  • 4.SENGOKU
  • 5.NAM-1975
  • 6.MUTATION NATION
  • 7.LAST RESORT
  • 8.KING OF MONSTERS
  • 9.FRENZY
  • 10.CYBER LIP
  • 11.FATAL FURY SPECIAL
  • 12.ART OF FIGHTING
  • 13.SUPER SIDEKICKS
  • 14.LEAGUE BOWLING
  • 15.METAL SLUG
  • 16.MAGICAL LORD
  • 17.BASEBALL STARS PROFESSIONAL
  • 18.SAMURAI SHODOWN
  • 19.KING OF FIGHTERS ’94
  • 20.FATAL FURY

There’s zero word on pricing, availability, or other crucial information. Hell, the system’s guts are still a mystery. It is just a system-on-a-chip, emulating a Neo Geo? Are there multimedia capabilities? Is it running some flavor of Android? So many questions, and no one is speaking yet. I’m even on the fence if this isn’t just an elaborate hoax.
